work Hi, I found your family's work to be some of the most beautiful displays of life I have ever seen. Then again, I just woke up, so who's to say what the future may hold. I am to be moving into the city soon to work on a project you would be interested in. I would love to meet you someday. Warmest Regards. Darin. I hope that I as well may help this place with oils and wood. But I feel that you have said all that need be. It feels that I cannot paint something that has not already been done, but on the other hand a heart tells that I might bring something to the world that has never been here before. And that this body might have to take over when the great painters, such as yourself, go on. And that I may have to teach the next set of true painters to experience the fact of limitless boundries. I guess what I'm asking is for your blessing. Now after writing all that I feel like a dork. And it seems as if I should listen to myself more often. Because most of the time I'm quite down on myself. I feel like your painting about lack of self love. And sometimes I feel like the middle section of "Journey of the Wounded Healer", like every force is pulling in every direction. And I have no idea why I'm telling all this to you, but I feel a little bit better already. Thank You for including me on your journey. You have taught me more than you know. Again thank you. Hey, maybe someday you'll see my art and will know that I could not have done it without you. Here we are in the moment feeling the essence of consciousness. Unofortunately some momenst reflect no light, while others shine and provide glimpses into eternity. Here Alex you have created a domain, a place in the now for the conscious realization of all that we are and beyond. The Sacred mirrors reflect and give us a window into the beautiful universal and eternal nature of our being. We need others and their power to help guide us to this place in the now where our minds are open and aware of all that we are. Your insight and reflections of what we are better enhances who we are. You have helped the now become a place of realization and exploration. Thank you for taking your light within and making it something we can all be apart of it. When we all start to see and feel that possiblity, we can then begin to embrace the bold and breathtaking nature of who we are. Thank-you for helping me to keep the light in my spirit bright and the openness of my consciousness eternal. You are an inspiration and gift to us all. I am quite interested in the Sacred Mirrors Chapel project. I am currently a student at the Evergreen State College here in Olympia studying in an ecological design program. In our program there is an on-going dialectic concerning the design dimensions of ethicality, sustainability, and beauty. The chapel appears to address these dimensions and in doing so, has resulted in a transcendent form. I am particularly curious as to possible materials and building techniques envisioned for the chapel. It would be great to keep informed about these details. It would also be nice to know the current status of the site selection process. Thanks and much love. Check out my rock band site when/if you have the time. sean sean <seantheguy@hotmail.com> Seatle, Wa USA - Wednesday, December 05, 2001 at 19:45:04 (PST) Roughly a decade ago, I first saw the work of Alex Grey in an art magazine. I was absolutely floored. You see, I have my degree in medical illustration, but even while in school I began imagining another way of putting the skills I was learning to use. I had misgivings about the western system of medicine - objectifying the body and ignoring its ties to the mind, spirit and cosmos. In my young mind's eye, which had recently been introduced to psychedelics and yoga, I envisioned someday being able to create images which could portray our physical situation a bit more thoroughly and truthfully. There was a picture there, though I sensed, rather than saw, its refinements. I graduated and did a brief internship, but never persued my degree. I did not forget the overwhelming project I had devised for myself in school, however, and dabbled a little here and there as I slowly familiarized myself with spiritual and energetic philosophies. Then I saw "Praying" and one or two other reproductions of Alex's and I said "Well. There it is." What I was looking at was PRECISELY what I had seen, though dimly, back in school. To this day I lack the technical skill and knowledge and self motivation to undertake such a project successfully. I am damn glad it is being done by another. Thank goodness it wasn't left to me! While such things no longer surprise me, I find similarities of vision among people fascinating. It only seems to confirm some universal truths, doesn't it? I expect that many folks "recognize" your work. I'd love to know how often you get messages like this. Guess I'll peruse the other comments. By the way, what a website! I am writing because the work that I chose was Nuclear Crucifixion with is being shown in the American Visionary Art Museum. I really have no background experience whatsoever in art at all, but I I have a strong spiritual connection and when I saw your work on the wall, something really empowered me. I've been looking all over the Internet for a downloadable image of the work not only to print and put up in my room, but also to show to my professor. At first sight, I really didn't know what to do. I think I just stood there with my jaw dropped and at the floor, but as I stared at it, I could really see the beauty in the miracle of life and the connection it makes with the soul. Thank You for you wonderful insight. You not only inspire people to think for themselves, which is something that writers lack because of their clear cut ideas, you give us a deeper understanding of sychronicity in its purest sense.--Leigh Ann Mastrini Leigh Ann Mastrini <Lbows22@aol.com> Baltimore, MD USA - Tuesday, December 04, 2001 at 11:40:26 (PST) Synchronicity is a very powerful mystery. In the order, the first name listed is Rosalinda, which is my legal first name but not a name I go by -- and it is the one on my credit card. If you sign my book, please let know I go by "Baylan". Thank you! I'm hoping to open a center in Albany, CA in January 2002 which will hold classes, seminars, etc. for those in the healing arts and education and research, as well as for individuals looking for information on self-care and their own journey. The goal is to provide a place for exposure to new information in small settings -- to effect future generations. Your work speaks so beautifully to the unseen part of our being, and must have a place in the Center. If you ever plan to come to this area (I found out too late that you were in the area recently!), please let me know and I'd love to meet you -- and perhaps there will be something we can do together! Since then I've viewed more of it and I am in awe. I'm an aspiring anthropologist currently enrolled in college, and I hope to pursue a path of knowledge that unites scientific inquiry with the mystic nature of existence. My mission is to trace the development of consciousness through symbolism and to unite those symbols into a collective visual language representative of humanity as a whole. I hope to find as many connections as I can between systems of belief, and I hope to become a teacher so that I can make those connections visible to my students. Experiencing your art was like an affirmation of universal truths that I have known always within. I pray that I can offer to those around me the clarity that I've found here. I love it not only for its deep spiritual content, but also its simple aesthetics. Your work adds much needed color in this dismal world. I am doing a research paper in College and you are my subject. I first saw your work on "Lateralus". Beautiful. I have a few questions and hope that I can get a response as soon as possible so I can finish my research paper. Short answers are fine. Will a "chapel" be built for your Sacred Mirrors project? Can I see these works on display anywhere? Will you ever show your work anywhere in the mid-west? Chicago? Detroit? Thank-you for your time, and I hope to get your answers soon (by Nov. 15 if at all possible). I haven't felt so connected by just seeing art and reading on someone else's visions of what we all are in a very long time. I have to say that this has inspired me to get back on my path to correctly find out who I am. I would appreaciate more information on how to begin again. Somewhere along the way I have lost myself once more. It always seems like a long path, but I already know that it is not backtracking for it is just more experience to finding who I am and what I am doing on this relm. This will be one of my regularly visited sites and hopefully the information will get me back on track and help head me on a straighter path than I have followed or allowed myself to. In 95 I was introduced to your book after a very powerful psy-spiritual experience, as the doors were opened to your pages I was engulfed by the power of subtlety and embraced with extacy by the warmth of your (and truely all of ours) visions. Even though the images were apparently alien, they took hold of my soul and free'd from this 3 dimensional world with the 2 dimensional mind and lifted me into dimensions I didn't know exist and I couldn't resist. It took me 2 years to find a copy for my own personal reflections...and the hunt for your book was a wonderous one. I fell in love with a great girl, explored electronic music as a dancer and dj, painted and met many amazing people....Since I have laid the pages before new friends and family like liquid love flowing their fingers, tickling their senses, challenging their belief's and opening their heart to a world that we only wish we always knew but have lived since forever. peace aoniatrium <wikwak@excite.com> buffalo, ny USA - Monday, October 15, 2001 at 08:15:46 (PDT) Josiah ounce showed your site and i love it your work is amazing Amanda Whittle <none> Lead, SD USA - Saturday, October 13, 2001 at 21:34:14 (PDT) Dear Mr. Grey, I first learned about your work when I started working at metaphysical bookstore in orlando which carries your work as posters. I was browsing at a local bookstore, biding time, waiting for the opening of a gallery show called "Divine" in which I have three paintings. (see www.fa.indiana.edu/~sofa/index2.html) I know your work through the book "Sacred Mirrors", which I used to leave lying around for my adolescent daughter to look at, thinking that it would be educational in spiritual, artistic, anatomical, and many other ways! So when I saw the new book on the shelf, I bought it immediately, without even opening it first. One week later, at a "lecture" I gave about my work at the gallery, I ended my talk by quoting this passage from the dialog in the chapter "Art as Spiritual Practice": "So artists need to recognise their own spiritual nature, find a way of manifesting it in their work, and then bring it out in the world so it can do some good...An artist has to find a way to adequately or amazingly convey spirit into their work. It has to be creative and filled with the real, scary fire of infinite love and beauty." After reading the book carefully, I must say thank you for your encouraging, inspiring, and clear words. (aesthetic, spiritual, thoughtful) I am a film major, so I have a huge respect for art, no matter what kind it may be. I came across your art when a friend let me read your book. It meant a great deal to me. I just wanted to express my admiration for your art. I wish I could afford some of the prints, but at this time all my money is sunk in film production. Thanks for your time. Undersigned, Christopher Browne Christopher Browne <c-browne@northwestern.edu> Evanston , IL USA - Wednesday, September 19, 2001 at 13:23:12 (PDT) Dear Alex: I just wanted to take the time to tell you, that in light of all the tragety that has surrounded us in this moment of time, I still can find some truth in your work as to why we do the things we do. The mind is an uncompleted puzzle that we piece together with each new experience, and I feel that the pieces being formed and ultimatly fitted recently are not the chosen ones for the majority of us, including myself. I hope you continue to spread your work to everyone who has sight, heart, and feeling because that is the ultimate of rewards. I will forever be changed in the ways I personally view things as a result of your artwork. I know not to be predjudice to my fellow man and woman, and I know not to do rash acts that could cause even more discomfort in the placing of the mind and body. Thank you again for your experiences. They represent more than just image and often invoke my most intuitive associations with spiritual realms. I just decided to peruse the site again to see if there was anything new and I just thought I'd leave a little "note" for you. Your artwork, when I discovered it, aided me in finally understanding the synchronious nature of my soul in relation to the world I thought I was seperate from. Your art has moved me whilst under the influence, yes, for that time being...but in a more expansive way, as if there is another line of time stretching in what used to be the dark to me, everyday of my life. Your artwork is like a fond elder that shared the most subtle ounce of wisdom and humbling love with me. It has spurred my imagination and it has allowed me to remember that which is. There are limitless ways in which I could express my feelings for your love and your life and how you have manifested it. I just wanted to let you know that you, along with every other experience in my life, have allowed me to see the ways in which everything is "solid". Everything touches. There is a material out in front of me, throughout me. There is a sound, a resonance, an echo, a love, and you are a special part of that. Thank you again. You are very much a kindred spirit in your single-minded working through life issues to what lies 'beyond'. Incidentally, the fellow who introduced me to your work is a painter who you might find interesting in his own right, though his style is very different. I myself am not a painter but a visionary composer, and my work can be explored from my website. I greatly look forward to your future major paintings. "If Tool appreciate his artwork, it's probably worth a shot," I thought. I looked over the website briefly and saw and read enough to interest me, so I decided to buy "Sacred Mirrors" to read and examine at my own pace (and not in front of a computer screen.) As I read through it, I came across a painting that just amazed me: "The Universal Mind Lattice." This painting was exactly what I had seen during a previous experience, but I could never explain it or even try to visualize it in a material way. Seeing this made me realize that Alex Grey was nothing short of brilliant. So all I really have to say is "Thank You."
