Blog› Spring's Imminent Arrival

It hailed today at CoSM here in the Hudson Valley. Now it's pouring down rain on the snow. As the earth is unfreezing, mud signals spring's imminent arrival.  Universally, archetypally we see symbols of the egg, babies and baby animals, pastel colors… Christ's resurrection mirrors the rebirth of nature and the coming triumph of the Sun in the Heavens as the days are getting longer. The skeletalization of the trees characterizing winter will be replaced by sprouts, bunnies and blankets of flowering plants, a budding nature field.

Symbols of death, new birth, and Nature's renewal

Spring time celebrations are happening all over the world. Persians celebrate the New Year on the Vernal Equinox. Annually, we honor the Persian New Year by eating Kookoo Sabzi, a very green frittata. Purim, recently observed by Jews, celebrates the heroism of the the divine feminine, the Jewish Cinderella, Esther. The food associated most with this Jewish spring holiday is the pastry, Hamantaschen, which looks curiously like a yoni and is especially overt when the traditional filling of poppy seeds is blurting out of the triangle, like many tiny black eggs. Eggs are also closely associated with Easter. The word "Easter" is closely related to estrous, a word originally from Greek οἶστρος meaning sexual desire and describing the female reproductive cycle. The death and then miraculous rebirth mystery of Christ bursting out of the grave is a reflection of the mystery of death and rebirth in nature. On the Vernal Equinox, Wicca, a modern pagan, witchcraft religion, celebrates Ostara, the name of both a feminine deity and the celebration welcoming spring and the "goddess-as-maiden."  Easter, Esther, estrous, Ostara… hmmm…

This Saturday we will open the celebration of the Vernal Equinox with a discussion of the scientific and mythic perspectives on the balance of day and night. Following our discussion, the CoSM rites of spring will unfold with ecstatic vibrations by some of todays finest electronic musicians, bellydance, fire dance, fire spinning, live painting and much, much more… Check the fab line-up at
