Blog› Waging Love

That time has rolled around again -- the anniversary of  our formal wedding on the snowy day of December 4th, 1977. In the living room of Allyson's parents, witnessed by only twelve relatives and one friend -- 13  total, Alex broke the glass to seal the deal, a Jewish wedding tradition. Friend of the family, Cantor Rosenfeld officiated the wedding and sang in Hebrew.  We made our personal and private commitment to each other on May 31st, 1975 -- eternity in the first kiss -- so we think of ourselves as married for 38 years.

To celebrate this auspicious occasion, we head out on the road for a tour of Southern cities. Art Basel Miami is one of the largest and most prestigious annual art fairs in the U.S. It happens the first weekend of December every year, so it is not the first time we've spent our anniversary here. We plan to celebrate for days with the Miami Love Tribe, at the Moksha Art Fair, a beautiful gallery in the Little Haiti. There will be a panel discussion, a Tribute to Terence McKenna featuring his brother Dennis and a number of visionary artists, including our dear friends Mark Henson and Randal Roberts!

Our next stop, Gainesville Florida, is the home of the University of Florida Medical School. Turns out, we have many friends there because the Medical School offers a unique focus on Art and Healing for future health care professionals. What a boon! Art is strongly considered a healing force at the University of Florida Medical School and we have always resonated greatly with that. In fact, in 1996 Alex, Allyson and Zena led a performance installation/collaboration in the lobby of the University of Florida Hospital, the Shands children's wing, where patients and their families were invited to hang a soft fabric heart with a message of their "heart's desire" and highest aspiration. We called the piece "Heart Net." This time in Gainesville, we will be speaking at The Harn Museum, discussing Alex's new book Net of Being  {with a co-writing credit to Allyson). It will be an intimate first come, first serve opportunity to get together with like-minded visionaries. Our teacher, the spiritual leader, Mickey Singer, founded the Temple of the Universe in Alachua, nearby and we look forward to a personal visit with one of our wisest guides. Check out Mickey's book The Unteathered Soul for some of the best in plain talk spiritual insight.

VISIONARY ARTS FAIR

From Northern Florida, we're off to Athens, a major college town, so we've heard. It will be our first visit to Athens, Georgia, and we look forward to making new friends and seeing many that have been with us before, especially in Atlanta and at Burning Man.  The Georgia Tribe hosted us at their fab Burning Man Camp, Area 51 in 2012. A wonderful bunch of freaks. After Athens, it's Atlanta, a real cultural magnet in the South. Atlanta has been one of our favorite places to live paint in the last couple of years. David Morris, Sugar Kane and the gang really know how to put on a good celebration of love and life.

Last stop on the tour will be to Asheville, North Carolina, a spiritual magnet and a creative center in the Southern U.S. Alex took a very special sacred geometry intensive in Asheville years ago. This will be Allyson's first visit to the fair city of Asheville, home of our good friends Papadosio. Great group. We should paint with them sometime.
